The amazing Rogers residence in McCarrs Creek Road - Church Point. Quite simply the most stunning residential Pole Home construction project you will find anywhere in Australia. Designed & built by us specifically for a tremendously challenging site, "Tumbarumba" is the ultimate in all-timber bespoke creativity and workmanship.

Every builder and carpenter who visits this home has looked up in awe at the sheer scale of the undertaking, and the incredible commitment necessary to deliver a landmark project like this on time and on budget. Peter & June Rogers purchased a beautiful bush block in Church Point which had the potential for magnificent views across the McCarrs Creek bay, but were shocked when several builders told them that it was virtually impossible to build a home there because the site was divided by a deep, unstable gulley and was affected by severe geotechnical challenges & restrictions. Luckily for the Rogers they found Team BuildFlex! |
Well, we weren't known as BuildFlex back then, but the core elements of The Team are still the same today. Watch the slide-show images above to see how we started with this rugged, bare block of land and constructed this awesome residence - piece by painstaking piece, complete with suspended carport and access bridge. Every single part of the structure was fully cut-on-site by "The Carpenter Guns" (AKA "The A-Team") - no pre-assembled components here.
There is simply too much information about this unique project to fit the whole story on one page, but suffice to say that the brief was to provide a full "design & construct" service which satisfied the owners' vision of a grand residence which had minimal impact on the natural flora & fauna, and solved the significant engineering & geotechnical requirements presented by the unstable site.
The block is very steep, and you will see in the slide show images that we managed to roll the excavator which was drilling the pole holes. Luckily it was restrained by a large tree and didn't go tumbling down the hill. You will also see that we had to build an access bridge across the gulley and a double carport - all in full pole + timber construction.
The project attracted much attention during the construction stage, including a feature spot on Maggie Tabberer's Home Show and several magazine & newspaper articles. Whilst the property is not visible from the road, it still dominates the hillside vista of the McCarrs Creek Valley at Church Point.
We were called back to the site several years after the home was completed to construct an additional living area, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and stair access etc underneath the existing north-western wing of the upper floor. It was quite gratifying to see the home as a fully occupied dwelling and to have an ongoing involvement with the project.
Peter & June Rogers no longer own the property, having sold and have moved to another unique piece of real estate in the Queensland Hinterland, and are now comfortable in semi-retirement. I think I will join them soon.
We have spoken and met with the new owners of Tumbarumba and can report that they are just as enthralled with the residence as were the Rogers. They were fascinated to learn the identity of the builder & original owners, and to receive some images of the construction process for their portfolio. In return, they have provided us with some superb images of the residence in its current format & with all new finishes - both internal & external. You just run out of superlatives when talking about this residence. The whole project is an instructive example of optimising the full potential of even the most difficult blocks of land.

Testimonial by Peter Rogers:
"... Notwithstanding the difficulty of the site and the design constraints, the actual construction was of the highest standard, and we were able to verify this through regular inspection by both the project engineer and also our friends, some of who are builders and architects.
Despite the difficulty of construction and the nature of the land, we were able to move into the house prior to Christmas, the poles having been concreted during Easter of that year.
Many visitors have remarked on the design and construction of the house, which has been photographed for magazines, and we have always been happy to recommend Wayne and his team to any people who have wanted to build a beautiful home.
Yours sincerely
Peter C. A. Rogers"
